Dadka badankii siday ugu adag tahay muddeynta isbedelka aaraa’dooda ayaan la wadaagaa. Sidaas darteed, waxaan isku dayi inaan ka adkaysto, intaan karo, si kastooy gacanta iigu haadiso. Markanse waxaanan ka adkaysan karin in saddexdii sanno iyo badhkii ugu dambeeyey uu igu dhacay barobax. Kama barobixin oo keliya dhulkaygii iyo xussuustii aan dhisayey wakhtiga dheer, ee sidoo kalena waxaan ka baxay aragtiyo badan. The Day Of Somaliland Students Died Young: Any Hero To Revive?

Today, I came across this article which I wrote in May 2006 in protest of the abolishment of university student committees or unions which led to the death of the Day of Somaliland Students. After seven years, I still feel this and dread the passing of every May 2nd that I do not hear students getting together. However, my hope is still there – that someday, somebody will revive it! Is it you?

It was one of these small, yet fine, contributions that escaped the attention of many people, let alone their appreciation. May 2nd , the Day of the Students of Somaliland Universities, stands still up the debris of the civil wars and clan partisan. It is the new struggle of the students, by the students, for the students to cross the boundaries of clan geography divided amongst them to start building a future where unity, liberty, and human dignity prevail. It is an intellectual consortium, emotionally healthy endeavour, and spiritual communion of the young, or to use the buzzword of politicians and social entrepreneurs of the day even though rarely do they mean it, the future leaders of this nation and, hopefully, this continent.

A Tale of Three Journeys

Dedicated to my sister, Hamda Nasiya, and the other sisters who are fighting for justice, enlightenment, and development one girl at a time. They are the inspirations under our noses we keep missing.

History is interesting until you have to take a test or, worse, until you have to face the daunting job of weaving jumbled incidents into a coherent story. While I am blessed not to experience the first, I am not equally immune to face the latter – especially, when that story is the journeys of my alma mater, my sister, and myself.

A decade A decade ago, I reached a milestone – completed Bachelor of Business Administration. In the same month, my alma mater, Amoud University, reached one more important than mine – granting bachelor degrees for the first time in the history of post-conflict Somaliland. The second cohort, which I was a member of, completed all exams but waited until April next year for graduation ceremony. Fortunately, that is still an understatement – it was the first time after the fall of the Democratic Republic of Somalia that an institution within the old borders of the republic granted a degree after the ouster of the dictatorship. Unlike Amoud or I, my sister’s, Hamda Nasiya as we call her at home, milestones require a closer examination as they are not readily visible. They are in the subtleties – the kind of subtleties that are  mentioned as “by the way, we did not recognize how important it was then but…” Her milestones are like a dark night that swallows the dramas of the day and the secrets of the night into its shroud of silence; or like the stillness of the ocean whose belly is the theatre of unparalleled acrobatics.

Park Your Car Like Your Soul

Three nights ago, my friends and I went to Al Omari Mosque in Edmonton to say Isha and Taraweeh prayers. The parking was not only full, but had a lot of cars, ours included, circulating to find a spot missed by the others. When at last we thought we got the blind spot, a parking attendant approached us and informed us politely that the “blind spot” was actually a private parking not owned by the mosque. He told us that those already parked there did it wrong. We had to park outside the mosque parameters, costing us a couple of minutes of walk back to the mosque.

Late Gaarriye (may Allah shower mercy on his abode) touched all of the Somali ethnic in so many ways. He touched some of us personally; others professionally; but all profoundly. He touched Abdirahman all – personally at Amoud, professionally as a key player in Habitat’s work on Somaliland local governments and all of them were profound. 

On early Monday morning, 01/10/2012, when I had completed my routine of checking work-related e-mails and noting down the day’s to-do list, I logged in the Facebook. I was shocked to see the announcement of death of the late Mohamed Hashi Dhama aka Gaarriye. The news then spread in Hargeisa and other parts of the country like a wild fire through phone calls and social media.

One of the pictures that never left my mind was on the wall of late Dr. Annelina Tonelli’s office. It showed a person who faces a mirror which reflects his back. Late Dr. Tonelli died trying to fix that picture. Here, Umayma redraws that picture – this time, in words though. 

Recently, I started to have some profound conversations with myself. Reflecting on my life, I found myself stuck with one question: Why we make the wrong choices and then not accept the responsibility afterwards? This question hit me so hard.

People usually find it much easier to blame someone else than own up their shortcomings. No one likes to be wrong. Our inflated egos take charge as soon as we sense any blame bucket passing around. But it is interesting that we don’t mind being at fault when we don’t know our mistakes. For some reason, our egos can accept to confess provided we do not feel that any comparison of knowledge is involved. I am not any different except that I find especially unsettling when I do not listen to my own conscience before taking a particular action.

Literature, according to some, is an honourable appreciation of tragedy. Leaders inspire their followers not only away from tragedy but also into utopia. Hamse helps us to appreciate Qaasim’s poem in light of the duality of unity or, maybe, the multiplicity of unity. More importantly, he unshackles us from the mental incarceration of a dominant interpretation, poking us to seek meanings beyond the original use. 

 INTRODUCTION

The fact that Somalis have rich oral tradition is largely agreed upon by Somalis and researchers, past and present, who visited their home in East Africa. Some writers, for example, referred Somalis as the ‘nation of poets’. The contents and substance of this oral literature was unrecorded due to absence of a script, which limited access to very few. Thus, no significant effort was spent on reflecting on what lessons that could be learned.

Apart from the introduction of the Somali orthography back in the seventies by the military regime, no other initiative, at national level, has been made to write Somali poetry in a way that is appealing to contemporary Somali youth. Furthermore, the link between modern education and the Somali way of life, as embodied in its oral wisdom, was never given its deserved attention. As a result, some question the relevance and value of the lessons learnt in the past.

Most of us questioned the value of local elections over nominated commissioners. Abdirahman shows us councillors have done more than we think and less than they could.  This digest, whose original full version is available here, demonstrates why local elections matter – for your health, income, and development – more than helping a political association mature into a political party. 

INTRODUCTION

Somaliland municipalities have passed through different stages during the past two decades. During the first decade, nominated district commissioners were in charge. In the second, the first municipal election was organized in Somaliland in 2002. Half a dozen political organizations ran for office. Elected councillors then elected mayors from within.

At the initiation of decentralized governance, the functions of the municipalities were severely affected by serious power struggles that diverted the attention of local councillors and administrators away from institutionalization and service delivery. This was coupled with limited resources, institutional and capacity concerns, and legal framework issues. However, as time went on, things improved. Local councillors, assisted by development partners, started to focus on their primary functions. Service delivery was specifically enhanced, though much needs to be done. In major towns, municipalities have started in the last couple of years to rehabilitate roads, construct new ones, and deliver other services. Neighborhood representatives remain engaged and financially support these projects.

Experiencing Amoud

A Nigerian colleague of mine once told me that they have a saying in Nigeria which is like, “You go through the school and let the school go through you.” I have not seen a place where that is more vividly present than Amoud – a place where you can call a microcosm of its own making that pierces its way to your core. And I have not seen somebody who embody such a transformation so perfectly as Khadija – somebody who had to work against the undercurrents of gender, clan, geography, childhood ideals, utopias, and many more. This piece is nothing short of that journey with Khadija, with Amoud, and with Somaliland…

Anyone who graduated from Amoud University regardless of their major will tell you that along with their academic degree, they earned a degree in Life. Experiencing Amoud, with all the sweet-sour moments, the disappointments and triumphs are far more rich and complex to be justifiably narrowed into a narrative of any sort. And even though I’ve avoided writing about it since my graduation, this piece has been a long time coming. I owe it to many who keep asking “What have you written lately?”

It Doesn’t Make Sense

One sentence that I used to hear a lot, but seems to be fading away, is “It doesn’t make sense.” I have no idea why I used to hear it a lot. For whatever reason, a lot of talkers in the past had a high time making themselves believable. I cannot suspect their oral prowess. A Somali proverb already confirmed, “Rag waa raggii hore, hadalna waa intuu yidhi,” which loosely translates to “The best of men are those of the past, and theirs was the best of speech.” Can we call their listeners alarmists? I haven’t seen a reason to suspect so.

Corruption: A Socially-Transmitted Disease

The word, corruption, occupies the lines of newspapers throughout the globe not for the sake of adoration, but for condemnation and disdain. It is a human suffering and atrocities; yet, it is committed by humans. It is an act no one pleases to be associated with, though only a tiny minority manage to be clean from it. Corruption is an act we commit in silence only to cry in public when it serves the advantage of others. It is not something we preach, but we practice to be imitated. It is a communicable disease that is transmitted through blood, breath and bodily-touch. Its effect is universally felt: it cripples the economy, crumbles the society, confuses the politics and kills the moral culture.

This article, written in a time when Kenya is trying to show the world its commitment to install viable state in Somalia (just at the start of the Imbagati Conference), delves deep into the way Kenyan Authorities treat, or more accurately, mistreat the Somalis doing business or whatever in their country. As ‘the international safe’ for the aid to Somalia, Kenya hosts the regional office of almost all the INGOs and UN agencies doing humanitarian and relief work in Somalia. Saeed’s piece, first published in Somaliland Times, puts to the surface the grudges we share at the teashops.

It is believed that Kenya is hosting a conference of reconciliation for Somalis next month. Mediating neighbours is very noble deed but Kenya’s record of good neighborliness is bogus for so many good reasons. If Kenyan authorities are to be taken seriously, they need to mend their ways when it comes to how they treat their neighbours, the Somalis.

Psychologists, even today, are arguing how much of our character comes from nature – that is the genetical and biological inplants – and how much of our behavior come from our nurture – the social environment that mold the way we think and act. My dad belongs to the latter part. Actually, he is not psychologist by schooling. His commonsense indicated to him that the latter was more sensible than the former. Neither am I a psychologist too. However, I also have some commonsense.

The Dead Still Living

At the northern corner of Gandhi Library, Hargeisa, there sits a young man in his mid twenties with a literature book in his hands. He is reading an article in the book with his eyes open wide, his posture straight up and his face filled with all the enthusiasm one can demonstrate in this highly tamed environment. Occasionally, he takes his eyes off the book and looks up, which an unbiased observer may think, that he is accessing unreached territories in his brain and past memories which were subject to decay. Whenever he does this, he returns his eyes back to the book and smiles as if though he saw what he so direly longed to see.
